Back pain is no picnic. It can be an agonizing and debilitating problem that interferes with every aspect of daily life. Statistics
show that eight of every 10 people will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, back problems are
the most common cause of disability for people under 45.
Check out the tips below to learn how to avoid back pain and how to ease your aches and pains:
- Don’t slouch! Be aware of your posture, constantly maintaining your back’s three natural curves.
- Make sure you have a firm mattress, and sleep on your back or side.
- If you sleep on your back, put a pillow under your knees to help keep your spine aligned.
- When sitting for long periods of time, make sure your chair supports the natural curves in your back. Use a lumbar pillow
or rolled up towel for extra support.
- When driving, position your seat so your knees are level with your hips.
- Your back bears most of your body’s weight when you're sitting. If you tend to sit for long periods during the day, try standing
while you’re on the phone or raise your writing surface high enough to keep from straining your neck.
- Bend with your knees and hips, NOT with straight legs and a rounded back.
- Lift with your legs, not your back. Squat and hold the object as close to your body as possible before you lift.
- Stay in shape and exercise regularly; keeping your body fit means less strain on your back.
- Wear cushioned shoes to absorb shock when you walk to help ease the impact on your back.
