In addition to providing general orthopaedic care, Gene W. Shaffer, MD specializes in treating patients with common and complex
foot and ankle problems, including arthritis, bunions, congenital disorders and diabetic foot problems. Dr. Shaffer holds
special interest in sports medicine, providing evaluation and treatment for patients with traumatic, occupational and athletic
injuries. He has served as one of the team physicians for Temple University’s sports teams, as well as on the sports medicine
staff for the Philadelphia Flyers and Phantoms.
Dr. Shaffer received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at
Temple University Hospital and a foot and ankle fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
Committed to medical education and training, Dr. Shaffer has presented on numerous topics such as orthopaedic problems related
to sports, foot and ankle conditions and injuries related to trauma. He has written articles for publications such as The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Temple University Orthopaedic Journal and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. Shaffer is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic
Society and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
