A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with additional qualifications in hand surgery, James S. Raphael, MD, specializes in
treating chronic and traumatic conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow. Dr. Raphael is well known in the region for his proficiency
in today’s most advanced orthopaedic surgical techniques including arthroscopy, microsurgery, replantation, free-tissue transfer,
nerve surgery and reconstruction. He treats conditions ranging from simple fractures to complex traumatic injuries, reconstructing
joints, replanting limbs and repairing nerves and tendons with expert skill and precision. Dr. Raphael also specializes in
the surgical treatment for complex neuromuscular disorders of the upper extremity, such as complications resulting from stroke,
traumatic brain injury and cerebral palsy. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Hand Surgery.
Dr. Raphael received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and completed his residency in orthopaedic
surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY. He also completed a fellowship in hand surgery at The Philadelphia
Hand Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Raphael is a member of the American Academy for Orthopaedic Surgeons,
the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and The Philadelphia Hand Club.
