Kidney disease is defined as any one of several chronic conditions that are caused by damage to the cells of the kidney. It
is a major cause of disease and death in the United States. More than 20 million Americans – one in nine adults – have chronic
kidney disease. Another 20 million more Americans are at increased risk for developing the disease. Since it cannot be cured,
treatment focuses on slowing the progression and avoiding complete kidney failure.
