Gastroenterology is the study of the digestive system, its function and disorders. Gastroenterologists are physicians who
specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases of the digestive system, which includes the
esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. When physicians refer to the gastrointestinal tract, they
are talking only about the portion of the digestive system that consists of the esophagus, stomach and intestine.
There are a number of common, chronic conditions that affect the digestive tract. However, one of the most common is gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD). This condition affects many millions of people, often reducing quality of life and, in some cases,
leading to more serious conditions. The management of GERD is of primary concern to the gastroenterologist.
