Medical Oncology
Medical oncology commonly employs chemotherapy, medicines specifically designed to destroy cancer cells. Albert Einstein Cancer
Center provides chemotherapy services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
If you need to be admitted for care, we offer a dedicated inpatient oncology unit. That means the cancer specialists on duty
are here full time — addressing the specific needs of cancer patients. Certified oncology nurses work with physicians and
other cancer specialists who make up the unit.
Outpatient chemotherapy services offer:
- Complete diagnosis
- Follow-up care
- Our own on-site lab for immediate blood results
- Our own on-site chemotherapy pharmacist and technician to ensure that you receive the proper medications and proper dosages
- A comfortable atmosphere
- Valet parking for easy access.
Chemotherapy treatments are delivered in a comfortably equipped suite. During treatments, strong medications are administered
by intravenous infusion or injection. Our skilled oncologists choose from dozens of highly effective chemotherapeutic drugs,
making their selection based on the type of cancer being treated and the patient's general health and age. Most Einstein Cancer
Center patients receive chemotherapy from one to five days each month over a period of three to six months.
Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncologists are able to direct beams of photon or electron radiation to the specific location of the tumor. Radiation
is used to suppress tumor growth or to permanently kill it. Therefore, these treatments may cure. Usually, these treatments
are delivered on an outpatient basis. They take only a few minutes each day, but are given over several weeks. Einstein offers
the latest three-dimensional treatment planning — an important technological advance in radiation oncology care. It allows
the radiation oncologist to view a three-dimensional image of the tumor on a computer screen, ensuring that the planned beams
of radiation will surround the mass from all directions. In other instances, radiation therapy may be used before surgery
to shrink the tumor, helping surgeons to more easily remove the cancer that remains.
Many types of cancer can be cured with radiation alone. Others require the use of radiation along with chemotherapy or surgery.
When used before surgery, radiation may shrink the tumor or make it disappear, which makes it easier to remove any remaining
cancer cells.
Surgical Oncology
Surgical Oncology simply means surgery to remove cancerous cells, or tumors, from the body. At Albert Einstein Cancer Center,
this treatment is performed by a highly experienced, technically skilled team of physicians. As a teaching hospital, we have
access to up-to-the-minute research, enabling us to offer outstanding expertise in cancer surgery. Our surgical oncologists
use the latest technologies to efficiently remove cancerous tumors from the body.
