Some people can't function without drugs or alcohol. Their lives revolve around the substance as more and more of it is needed
to feel the same "pleasant" effect. When an individual exhibits destructive patterns of alcohol and drug use - affecting careers,
families and lives - that person is considered to be addicted.
Currently almost 14 million Americans - one out of every 13 adults - abuse alcohol. Millions more are addicted to drugs. Some
have a problem with both. Certain individuals abuse drugs and alcohol to escape from life. Others want to get "high". Most
people with a drug or alcohol dependency can not stop on their own. Quitting "cold turkey" often creates strong withdrawal symptoms, such as aches and pains, trembling, vomiting,
insomnia and diarrhea. The first step to recovery is asking for help.
